从讲师晋升到专任副教授，往往要经过八九年甚至十来年，在这个过程中，因教学需要，接触不同领域的知识，不断拓展视野，最后才以某个专业领域的出色成绩，获聘为专任副教授，从此有了明确的专业方向，长期集中研究某一领域。再经过八到十年，晋升教授，然后再有八到十年，就到了退休年龄（国立大学通常为63岁，退休前或退休后再转聘到私立大学，再至70岁退休），那时通常已在各自的领域取得令学界认可的成绩。这样的例子其实中国也曾有过，我的硕士导师徐朔方先生就曾庆幸自己在调入高校任教的头几年内，教遍了大学中文系的全部文学课程，迫使他涉猎了更为广阔的范围，为日后的专精打下了坚实的基础。
